Botho University conducts Open Day for Parents

On Friday 17th March 2017, Botho University invited parents of all currently enrolled students for an Open Day and interaction session. The event was held at both the Gaborone and Francistown Campuses. The main aim of the event was to answer any questions about the institution, its programmes and the facilities and resources provided to students.

As part of the event, parents were taken on a tour of the campus facilities to give them an appreciation of the teaching and learning environment. For many parents, this was the first visit to the institution. The campus tour was followed by a detailed question and answer session where senior management addressed queries raised by parents or guardians. At the end of the question and answer session, the lecturers and Heads of Department of respective faculties and programmes were on hand to answer any specific queries.

138 parents attended the event in Gaborone and 70 parents in Francistown. Parents and guardians expressed their appreciation of the event, and especially the opportunity to have all their queries answered directly by the relevant members of staff.

The University was extremely grateful for the parents’ presence and assured them that their children were being provided with high quality education. Parents and guardians also stated that although their children were at tertiary level, they would still like to be involved in all aspects of their education and performance from the onset.

Botho University appreciated and took note of all the feedback and plans are underway to make the Open Day a regular activity. CHE fair-Best Overall Stall Representation

Having opened just a year ago in Maseru, Lesotho, Botho University continues to make a good impression at the annual Lesotho CHE Fair.

Botho University was announced winner of ‘Best Overall Stall’ and ‘Best Stall in University Category’ at the CHE Fair 2017 held at Manthabiseng Convention center in Lesotho recently.

Having participated for the 3rd consecutive year, BU emerged as the winner from among many leading educational institutions that took part in the CHE fair.

Botho University designed the stall with the intention of creating brand awareness and visibility at the fair. The stall reflected the diverse programs developed and offered by Botho University.

The Botho University stall marked a unique approach in connecting with the audience at the CHE Fair and gave a glimpse of the campus environment and the great opportunities the youth would be able to acquire in stepping into their professional careers with a Botho University education. Many young people including students visited the Botho University stall to explore opportunities in achieving their career dreams and learn more about potential programmes options.

Botho University was honored to be a part of the CHE fair 2017 and take great pride in educating the youth of the country on programmes that help them make their professional dreams a reality. Botho University made a benchmark this year in emerging as the winner of ‘Best Overall Stall ' and ‘Best Overall Stall Universities Category. Francistown BHRDS fair

Botho University gave BGCSE leavers an opportunity to meet with career guidance professionals at the recent Botswana Human Resource Development Council Fair which was held for the first time in Francistown.

The Botswana Human Resource Development Skills (BHRDS) fair and career clinics held from February 27 to March 2 at the Business Botswana Northern Trade Fair Grounds was geared towards promoting the education and training sector while reflecting on strategic issues within the education sector. Botho University took part in the Fair and ensured that there was maximum awareness of the Botho university brand and educated stakeholders and the public on its products.

Botho University stall represented the University’s diverse programmes as the Botho state of the art facilities was represented well through the design of the stall, that had recently won Botho university “Best overall Stall” in Maseru Lesotho at the CHE fair.

Botho University declared “Best Private University”

Botho University scooped the “Best Private Institution” award at the recent Botswana Human Resource Development Council Skills (BHRDS) Fair & Career Clinics in Gaborone.

Botho University Marketing Manager, Tebogo Matebesi, said that they are very pleased with the results as they celebrate 20 years this year. “What a great way to celebrate a 20 year milestone and be recognized for the efforts we are making to transform the Education sector in Botswana. We have come from humble beginnings, still going strong and holding on to providing Quality Education.

Matebesi said the fair was as an opportunity to inform the public about the Botho brand, its products and services especially prospective students who come from all over Botswana to meet all universities at the fair.

According to Matebesi, Botho University has campuses in Gaborone, Francistown and Maseru and plans to continue setting a footprint all over Southern Africa. Botho University offers Campus and Distance learning and continues to offer quality education. Botho University has faculties, including, Business & Accounting, Hospitality and Sustainable Tourism, Computing, Health & Education, and Engineering and Applied Sciences and Graduate Studies and Research. The award winning stall at the BHRDS Fair depicted quality, excellence and innovation with its attractiveness and outstanding service by Botho university staff. Matebesi said the criteria for judging included customer service, packaging of products and services, easy navigation for students within the stall and how user friendly the stall was.

During the fair Botho held a Tablet PC lucky draw for applicants and the lucky winner “Katlo Olorato was announced the winner on Yarona Fm. “Annually Botho University gives applicants the opportunity to enter this lucky draw as a fun way of engaging the students and imparting knowledge about Botho.” said Matebesi. Apart from the outstanding, easily accessible stall, one of the aspects that make Botho University stand out from other Universities is the online application process that makes it easy for the students to apply from anywhere. The University is driven by the core values of excellence, leadership, and innovation, and aims to become a centre of excellence in higher education and a driver for positive social change.

BothoExpotees 2017

Another successful BothoExpotees event was held on the 14th of February 2017. Hosted by Botho University for the fourth time, the spectacle featured a wide range of students exhibiting their final year projects.

The event was adopted from one of our partnering Institutions, Teesside University in the United Kingdom. Botho University and Teesside University joined forces to offer the Teesside top up degree, BSc (Hons) in Computing. The first Expotees event was held in 2014, and favoured students doing the Teesside top up degree. In 2016 Botho and Teesside agreed to open up the event to other Faculty of Computing Students pursuing local Botho University degrees, paving the way for the BothoExpotees 2017.

Botho students took the opportunity to showcase the skills they have acquired through their time at the University. Some of the projects on display included software development, web based applications, mobile applications and even networking solutions for small to medium companies.

The 2017 event was organized by the Faculty of Computing with assistance from the Marketing, Learning Resources and the Technical Departments. The Committee comprised of Dr. Srinath Doss, Mr. Kendra T. Makoni, Mrs. Thokozile Dumedisang, Mrs. Maiwa Motsamai, Mr. Herman Moseki and, from the Administrative team, Dean of Computing Mr. Chandrasekeran Nammalware, Assistant Dean of Computing Mr. Amarendar Thangenda, Head of Department Post Graduate Studies in Computing Dr. Narayanan Sreekumar, Marketing Manager Mr. Tebogo Matebesi, and IT Manager Mr. Sampath Kumar.

A total of 24 students exhibited their products to the public under the theme, “IT Innovative Solutions for a Future Generation”. The attendees included representatives from various companies, media outlets and government departments, such as University of Botswana, The Voice, BOPA, BIFM, BIH, Botswana Police Service, Ripples Pty. Ltd, The Patriot, Century Office Supplies, Solid Care Services, and the Ministry of Administration of Justice, to name a few.

From the company representatives, three judges were selected to single out the best projects from the lot. The judges were Dr. G. Malema, Mr. Omphile Sediti from University of Botswana and Magistrate Galaletsang P. Ramokate from the Ministry of Administration of Justice. The keynote speaker was Mr. Jay Ramesh, the chairman of the Board of Directors for Botho University, who challenged the students not to stop at acquiring academic skills, but to also tap into their entrepreneurial skills to create employment for themselves and others.

Miss Tapiwa Maphane won first place with her web application, which notes and stores a user’s medical history for easy access during doctor’s consultations. Second place went to Mr. Tebogo Ishmael, who developed an application called Property Spy which helps real estate companies look after their properties, rentals and potential clients. Third place went to Miss Oteng F. Molefi for her chemistry tutor app to help students studying for exams.

Botho University hosts Student Motivational Workshop

Botho University held a student motivational workshop at the beginning of the year 2017 to kick start the year. Themed “academic success – gateway to a successful career”. The Teaching Excellence Department at Botho University is mandated with improving the quality of teaching and learning in the university. It is on this backdrop that various initiatives and programmes are carried out with the sole intention of providing support to both staff and students in their learning and teaching. On the 31st of January 2017, students were treated to a Motivational Session filled with various activities. The main objective of the session was to engage with the student body, and try encouraging them to take their learning more seriously. Particular emphasis was placed on the following issues; Maintaining a healthy lifestyle to ensure effective learning; Preparing for your career; Entrepreneurship as a career; Student motivation.

The day included keynote addresses by two high-profile speakers. The first interaction was a presentation by Ms Lillian Moremi, who is a highly experienced academic mentor, coach and trainer. Mr Ndinaye Chengeta, the second speaker is a seasoned entrepreneur with business ventures in various fields i.e. Events Management, Video Production and Agriculture. Both speakers highlighted that there are various opportunities that can be seized upon, emphasizing that they must be focused in their academic life and general outlook, indicating that success is a result of hard work. The workshop attracted a good number of students, with the feedback indicating that the workshop highly met their expectations. The students were greatly inspired by the motivational session. They highly recommended it to continue happening, but to consider increasing the duration of the session.

Teaching Excellence Workshop

On 30 and 31 March 2017, Botho University’s Teaching Excellence Department held its Teaching Excellence Talks at in its Gaborone and Francistown campuses, under the theme, “Research Led Teaching: The Challenges and Implications of The Nexus For Academic Staff and Students.” This theme was influenced by the rising importance of research in higher education today. Over the past few decades research has grown in leaps and bounds, as now being seen as a key factor that can enhance the quality of teaching and learning. The theme was facilitated by Prof Mogege, who is currently a Chief Research Specialist in the Education and Skills Development Programme at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in Pretoria, South Africa. Prof Mogege highlighted that the notion of ‘a symbiotic relationship between research and teaching constitutes the very core of higher education’, and it has served as an important cornerstone for many higher education institutions. These two core strands of activity are commonly referred to as a ‘research-teaching’ nexus. He defined Research Led Teaching as ‘the use of the teacher’s disciplinary research to benefit student learning and outcomes’. Prof Mogege indicated that there is much discussion and debate in the literature on the relationship between teaching and research, which range from being incompatible to being mutually beneficial. Despite this growth, many challenges still remain in Universities to bridge the gap between teaching and research. This is largely due to various factors, like the absence of policies to monitor, develop and maximise this relationship. Another challenge to facilitating this relationship is that sometimes research and teaching may pull in opposite directions in terms of demands on staff time and institutional and external drivers. This therefore becomes an institutional as well as an individual challenge to promote and sustain such synergy and ensure that research and teaching are not experienced as mutually exclusive activities.

Despite these challenges, the benefits of research led teaching are felt mainly by the students, with the following being highlighted

  • Deeper understanding of the knowledge bases of the disciplines and professions which they are studying
  • Development of intellectual capabilities and inter-personal skills;
  • Enhanced engagement in their studies.

In addition, he highlighted the difference that a Research Led Institution had from others, and the following were some of the characteristics:

  • Research active staff;
  • A culture of inquiry;
  • Evidence-based teaching;
  • A community of scholars;
  • Research aligned teaching;
  • Teaching-led research.

He concluded by over-emphasizing the overall benefit of research led Teaching, and the fact that a university that partners teaching with research will produce highly effective and efficient scholars who can take up any responsibility given to them in the workplace.

Botho University, throughout its 20-year history, has never waivered from its commitment to provide quality education to its students that is at par with international standards. The institution is proud to showcase all its various laboratories used to provide practical training to its learners from various programmes. These labs are fully equipped with all the necessary equipment to meet the learning outcomes of the programmes offered.

Additionally the University has computerised and non computerised classrooms, practice rooms and lecture theatres for teaching and learning. Such extensive facilities provide our students a “real-life” learning experience, ensuring that they attain the skills needed to work in the industry.

  • Jewellery Computer Aided Design Lab: This lab covers the skills necessary to become a jewellery design expert. In this lab learners are given training on using Rhino, a CAD modeling software package that enables the learners to accurately model designs ready for rendering, animation, drafting, engineering, analysing and manufacturing jewellery. The lab is equipped with computers that run “Rhino software”.
  • Design Studio and Gemmology Lab: A design studio enables learners to get engaged in conceiving, designing and developing new products or objects pertaining to Jewelry Manufacturing and Design. The lab has microscopes, polariscopes, dhicroscopes, eye loupes, spectroscope, diamond tester, diamond grading simulant kit, weighing scale for gemstones, refractometer, tracing light boxes, a 3D printer and computers.
  • Jewellery Workshop: This workshop enables learners to be creative and learn the basics of jewellery making. This workshop is equipped with Buff Polishing machine, Magnetic Polishing machine, Ultrasonic cleaner, Workbenches, Jewelry tool kits, Wire drawing machines, Ring size enlarger, Fordom multipurpose motors and Ring and bangle mandrels.
  • Casting Lab: This lab is used by the learners to learn the casting process as a part of jewelry manufacturing process, in which a molten material such as metal, plastic or any other material is poured or forced into a hollow mold and allowed to solidify within the mould and then ejected or broken out to get a fabricated jewelry part. The lab has equipments such as Wax injector, Vulcanizer, Different size of flasks, Wax Carver, Burnout furnace, Centrifugal casting machine, Melting furnace, Vacuum investment mixer.
  • Chemistry Lab: This lab has adequate supply of glassware and reagents. Chemistry Labs provide opportunities to study the selected aspects of chemistry by performing the necessary experiments for eg on Titration, Estimation of HCl using Na2CO3 as primary standard and Determination of alkalinity in water sample, Determination of DO content of water sample by Winkler’s method.
  • Physics Lab: Provides opportunity to practice and test physics concepts applied in optics, thermal physics, properties of matter and liquids. The lab is also used to apply physics principles of electromagnetism to evaluate engineering properties of materials. The physics lab has the required sets of non-consumable apparatus for students to carry out the experiments.
  • Electrical Installation and Circuits lab: Provides opportunity to gain hands on skills to perform the correct installation procedures and wiring connections for common residential switching devices outlets and low voltage circuits. Students are able to perform proper installation procedures for various wiring methods, installing a residential consumer service including a variety of household circuits, preparing a material list, laying out drawing and panel schedule for a residential consumer service, installing extra-low voltage signal circuits, preparing wiring, layout and schematic diagrams for extra-low voltage signal circuits, and safely using test equipment and power tools commonly found in industry
  • Kitchen Operations Lab: This lab gives the learners the opportunity to experience a fully functioning restaurant kitchen, where the students prepare food for diners in the restaurant. The lab uses a Pilot POS system with digital interfacing to the kitchen to be able to train the students on POS software as well as traditional ordering methods.
  • Rooms Operations Lab: The lab consists of a front desk, 4 en-suite rooms, public spaces and a laundry. This gives the learners the “real-life” experience of a fully functioning rooms setup, including reception, laundry and rooms. Students are required to learn all functions in a rooms operation to ensure that they are as operationally sound as possible once they are finished. The rooms lab is also equipped with the “Opera training suite” to ensure that students can work on a property management system in their classes.
  • Food Service Lab: The food service lab is a 24 seater restaurant, it works in conjunction with the Kitchen lab so that all food produced in the kitchen can be served in the restaurant to clients. Currently, these clients consist of staff at the university, however the objective is to open it to the public. The lab uses a Pilot POS system with digital interfacing to the kitchen to be able to train the students on POS software as well as traditional ordering methods. The Food Service Lab is also equipped with a mobile bar setup and serves as a lab for the Bar Operations modules.
  • Cisco Networking Lab: The Cisco Lab is equipped with all the required Cisco equipment to be able to deliver the modules mapped to the Cisco curriculum efficiently. The lab is dedicated to train the students on Cisco networking technologies. It contains the Cisco networking equipment such as: Ethernet Switches, Routers, DLINK Racks, and Client machines. The lab has a topology of routers and L2 Switches with hosts connected to the network. The lab also has Straight Through cables, Cross-Over Cables, RS-232 Cables, Console cables and Crimping Tools.
  • Multimedia Lab: This lab is used to provide learners practical experience on graphic design, audio and video recordings, game development and animations. This lab is equipped with computers that have software such as Matlab, 3D Max, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Flash. The lab also has Webcams, Joysticks and Headsets with microphones.
  • Operating Systems and Hardware Lab: This lab equips learners with practical skills such as identifying the individual hardware components of the computer system, assembling and disassembling PCs, troubleshooting, installing and configuring computer system, maintaining and troubleshooting peripheral devices, installing and configuring operating systems, identifying the different network technologies and identifying personal computer security concepts.
  • Network Security and Computer Forensics Lab: This lab is used to demonstrate and to give hands on experience on Ethical Hacking, Information Data Security, Malware Analysis, Computer Forensics and Data Recovery. The network used in this lab is isolated from the campus network so as to facilitate practical activities without any disturbance to the campus network. It has been built with the support of a separate Domain Controller, DHCP Server, File Server, Deployment Server and DNS Server. The lab has a dedicated internet facility that allows practical work which need Internet. The architecture of the lab is setup as 5 different VLANs (Virtual LAN) so that the students can get a feel of doing activities like hacking a network from a different network. The setup in this lab caters for the hands-on experience in security related topics covered in the programme.

BU Francistown- 2017career fair

The Department of Students and Alumni Affairs in Francistown campus held its annual career fair for students and alumni on the 6th April 2017 under the theme “Striving towards a successful partnership in creating career opportunities” The highly attended event gave Botho University graduates an opportunity to interact and learn about career prospects in line with their field of study. Several business entities and government departments which include among others; the Department of Youth Sports & Culture, Gender Affairs, MVA, and FNB, BBS, Botswana Defence Force, were at the event by setting up stalls that were characterized by health talks, awareness messages and discussions. The Dean for the office of Student Services & Outreach- Mr Kgosi, The Managing Director of Jumcorp and Civils Contractors, Mr Justice Mojanaga and The retired Customary Court President, Mrs Mosojane were some of the distinguished guests that graced the event.

When delivering the keynote address, the guest of honor Mr Mojanaga indicated that he felt honored to been invited to the university’s important event citing that he is aware that Botho University is one of Botswana’s largest private tertiary institutions operating in the country since 1997.He expressed gratitude for the level of growth the university has been experiencing to this point, as well as the many international awards and certifications the university has achieved. Mr Mojanaga further mentioned that this year’s career fair runs under the theme ‘Enhancing graduate employability through industry connections’. Thus the theme addresses the importance of networking and fostering partnerships with the industry even before students graduate. He alluded that networking with potential employers opens a number of opportunities for graduates. The exchange of knowledge happens through such forums such as this one. This partnership can be done in several ways such as internships, attending exchange programs, job shadowing and volunteering. This means students need to make an impression whilst there is still time. So he urged them to take advantage of the event to establish professional networks with the would-be employers, ask for internships or volunteer opportunities.

The guest of honor was also elated by the number of exhibiting companies, and applauded them for the dedication and cooperation, adding that he believes the fair is also a marketing strategy for their various services not only to Botho Community but to the world at large. He concluded by applauding the university for the state of the art campus and lamented that he believes Francistown community will benefit from it in many ways including the corporate world.

In his welcome remarks, the Dean of OSSO, Mr Kgosi expressed his pleasure in welcoming all the exhibitors, students and Alumni to the career fair which is a very important annual event in Botho University calendar. He alluded to the fact that the event, has no doubt established itself as a premier event in equipping students with comprehensive and latest information on further studies, training and career openings under one roof. The Dean however cautioned students against malicious information spreading around that Botho University courses are not accredited. He made it clear to the audience that all programmes offered at Botho are either accredited or ongoing process; therefore there has never been a course that has been rejected by BQA. He encouraged students to remain calm and focused in their studies for them to realize their goals.

The Dean also informed the audience about the mandate of the Department of Student Affairs and Alumni. He mentioned that the department offers an array of Career Development Services such as the students’ mentorship program, counseling, job searches and placement, local and international internships, and development workshops, as a way of equipping students with necessary and relevant skills which will enable them to be competitive in the job market. He further indicated that all these services are offered in all Botho University centers, that is Gaborone, Francistown, Maun and Maseru. He said this shows the commitment the university has in educating the nation of Botswana and beyond.

Mrs Mosojane , an elder and retired Customary court President, also gave an inspiring motivational speech by urging Botho university students and alumni to be different, creative and think outside the box. He implored them to utilize the many opportunities availed by the government in starting up their own businesses. In his vote of thanks, the Francistown Center Manager - Mr Joseph Gwekwerere applauded all companies, media houses and government departments who were represented at the career fair for having contributed to the success of the event.

Botho University Coaching Clinic Launch

Botho University launched its Coaching Clinic Projecton the 6th May 2017, in collaboration with Gaborone Bonnington South Community.

The launch brought local coaches and BU coaches from various sports codes together to deliver lessons to Primary and Secondary students, as well as out-of-school youths, from Gaborone West and surrounding areas.

Esteemed members of the local community were in attendance as guests and speakers, including the MP of Bonnington South, Mr Gaolathe, and Kgosi Rammalaof Gaborone West, among others. Botswana Rugby Union, Football Union Botswana and Botswana National Sports Council also graced the event.

The Coaching Clinics will provide children and youth with coaching in different sports codes, in an environment that is conducive for learning, growth and leisure.By being involved in the grassroots development of players, nurturing their talents and equipping them with the necessary interpersonal skills for professional and personal growth, the clinics will complement BNSC strategy delivery.

As part of BU’s passion to drive corporate social responsibility, the University will provide facilities for training on a monthly basis and also training equipment and logistical arrangements for the sessions.

Gaborone Bonnington South Community will assist Botho University with the mobilisation of target groups, generation of interest and participation by the target population. Bonnington South will also be on hand to organise follow-up activities to ensure the longevity of the project, and enable it to cascade to the entire community.
